Huge Expansion of Alicante Airport
Alicante’s El Altet airport has been undergoing a massive expansion programme recently, with the construction of a new terminal building which will increase the passenger handling capacity of the airport to 20 million passengers annually from the current 12.2 million. This new terminal building will be officially opened on March 23rd by Jose Blanco the Minister of Development and will be in operation the following day.

There will now be a total of 96 check-in desks instead of the current level of 53, boarding gates will increase from 16 to 26, and passport control points will rise from 17 to 32. The new building is spread over 8 floors in total, and will increase the passenger handling area from 54,800m² to 333,500m². This will also mean an increase in levels of employment in the area, with over 400 new staff being recruited by both Aena and external companies.

Seven new destinations have already been added to the already impressive list of places you can reach from Alicante airport and further connections will no doubt follow in the future. Car parking, restaurant and shopping facilities have all been increased with the advent of this new terminal and all combine to make Alicante’s new airport a leader in the Mediterranean area.

Budget airlines account for a major share in the levels of traffic at Alicante, with EasyJet and Ryanair operating many routes – not only to the UK but also elsewhere in Europe. Many of the new routes have been created by Ryanair and include destinations such as Tampere in Finland, as well as Brno, Kaunas, Magdeburg and Humberside. Italy and Hungary also feature in other airlines 2011 schedules.

Package and budget holiday operators have long been attracted to Alicante and the whole Costa Blanca area generally, and the enlarged facilities at Alicante can only make the whole process of handling ever larger numbers of holidaymakers and tourists so much easier than in the past. With many of the major resorts of the Costa Blanca such as Benidorm, Elche, Altea and Denia within easy reach of the airport, this can only be good news for the Spanish tourist industry and the major investment by central government will doubtless prove to have a hugely beneficial effect in the area as a whole.

  1. I am English and speak conversational Spanish but having intensive lessons to improve my Spanish to become fluent.

I am seeking employment, perhaps in the new terminal, especially on the check in desk.

I would welcome an interview regarding work at the new or existing Alicante terminal.

I live in Benissa and travel is easy from here to the airport.

  2. I love the new airport terminal! My only comment is that I do wish the parking areas had been called and sign posted North and South. I lost my car on Level 5 and could not find it, until I realized there was a 2nd half!!

Also a reminder to pay for your parking before you attempt to leave the airport!

Other than that, I love it.
